Michael, another tip or two that might help. Look at the area you want to draw as a whole. Stop and absorb it before you even draw a line. Consider each line before you put it down. Go a lot more slowly and mindfully.

This may seem silly but this helped me when I first had to do figure demos at RISD. Talk about terrified. I found it helped me to slow down and draw with more consideration rather than rushing through.

I made less, more accurate lines.

Hi Michael,

An exercise that I plan to try soon is to not allow myself any lines. My son has agreed to model and all I'm going to start with is shape and value. Maybe trying this would help you "loosen" up. She appears to be trapped in her lines! You got guts, Michael, you're an inspiration to my perfection addiction. I'm glad you posted this, you practice what you preach.

Yes, there are other professionals here and yes they are going to see your mistakes - but that is how we help each other become better painters - they are also going to see your successes and your growth. You people know what I can do with good photo reference so I have nothing to prove. Now it's time for me to learn to do the same level of work from a live subject and I am hoping others will go along for the ride.

I did use far too heavy lines for this piece. I was just so proud that I got the shape of the head right. :)
