This is my first "official" self portrait.

It is done on gesso panel, 14 x 11. I still have just a few tweaks to do but I have to put THAT nose... away! :D

Eric Braks 03-22-2006 09:19 PM

Congratulations its perfect! You should post the eye close-up too -its stunning!

Oh thanks Eric... here's the eye.

It's amazing how things go a bit smoother when you really know your sitter! ;)

Beth this is fabulous, great color and such strong paint handling! Enter this one in all the contests!

Alexandra Tyng 03-22-2006 11:02 PM

Well, Beth, I will definitely be able to recognize you now when I see you. I will be the one asking you to just turn to the side...just a little more...yes!

I love the pose. It gives you an inquisitive look. You have almost given me enough courage to post my self-portrait. (Almost but not quite.)

There's so much wonderful color in the skin and lively brushwork. Thanks for posting the closeup--that area around the eye is especially full of colorful lights, and fascinating to see up close.

Alex

Just gorgeous Beth! Wow!

Marina Dieul 03-23-2006 08:46 AM

gorgeous!
The close up of the eye really impressed me: the subtlety of the colors is fantastic. I love those blue. I like the background too, it really adds a dimension.

Mischa Milosevic 03-23-2006 09:29 AM

Beth, grate self portrait. Wow! I second Alex on the self portrait encouragement. I would love to see a close up of the nose and lips. The sense of translucency is smashing.

Chris Saper 03-23-2006 09:55 AM

Beth,

This is a beautiful piece of work, and is very much you. Wonderful color.

Chris Saper 03-23-2006 09:56 AM

PS Did you do this in the mirror? How did you set it up?

Patricia Joyce 03-23-2006 10:49 AM

Lovely, Beth. The dimensionality is wonderful, you can really feel the air around the head. Beautiful expression!

Sharon Knettell 03-23-2006 11:50 AM

Beth,

This just knocks my socks off!

What absolutely gorgeous and luminous skin-tones.

Color, lots of REAL color. I love it!

Allan Rahbek 03-23-2006 04:07 PM

Simply beautiful!
You have taken everything to the limit, the color, contrast and emotion.

I don

Whew Mischa you want to see the nose close? :) Nice try Allan on the nose thoughts, my mom was known as "Nosler"! (Osler)

Thank you all so much, it's fun to do yourself because you can really push it. Personally I think that is exactly why Rembrandt painted himself so much. (I know there are other reasons too.)

Chris I had to do this from reference I shot. With my mind... you know the type when you look up a number and you forget it when you turn away... I thought it would make me crazy. I also wanted to highlight the most prominent part of me, thus the profile. Now if I could have animated the lips talking, the whole thing might have been different. ;)

Here are the close ups Mischa, I wasn't sure how close you wanted to see this, so two ways.

Ilaria Rosselli Del Turco 03-23-2006 06:58 PM

Beth, this is stunning, I especially like the modelling of the form, very well shown in the nose close up.
I am working on a self portrait too, so I really empathize with this painting.
Many thanks for posting it
Ilaria

Mischa Milosevic 03-23-2006 07:17 PM

Beth, exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!

Claudemir Bonfim 03-23-2006 07:24 PM

That's just mathematics: Great Artist + Beautiful Model = Masterpiece.

Elizabeth Schott 03-24-2006 08:32 PM

Thanks again all.

Bonfim are you sure you are not Romeo?????? ;)

Claudemir Bonfim 03-24-2006 09:21 PM

LOL!

Chris Saper 03-24-2006 10:46 PM

My thought is so much "Wow" -this is a marvelous portrait. I m really thrilled for you.

Tom Edgerton 03-27-2006 05:48 PM

Hey, hey, hey Beth...this is really strong. Good for you!

Beth,
Love the coloring, modeling and the noble feature. What a great job!

Michele Rushworth 03-28-2006 11:32 PM

Wow is right! This is a prize winner for sure.

Elizabeth Schott 03-29-2006 07:07 PM

I can't say thanks enough!

It's funny to see this after reading the limited palette thread!

Tom you must have some new goodie posted somewhere, I'll have to go look.

Michele did you ever post a "post Gov." thread anywhere so we can hear about any additional or new great things in your life?

:sunnysmil

Michele Rushworth 03-29-2006 07:56 PM

There's not much new and exciting. Doing lots of commissions but nobody famous this year, at least so far!

Mark Lovett 04-02-2006 11:31 PM

Wow nice! Lots of drama, movement and bold color.
