Carlos, the painting is beautiful as always. I am intrigued by your choice of composition though and need you to explain your choice, so I can learn s.th new ;) .

I looked at this the 1st time on my IPhone (small image) and was immediately struck that the figures, table and plates on the wall seem to form a big triangle. Unlike many compositions where the figures are inside the triangle your figures make up one side of the triangle. This is even more emphasized by the fact that the older sister is gazing down on the younger one. Then there is the downward glance of the latter, towards the arm which again leads the eye back towards the center of the painting. I find this composition interesting, because I keep wondering why none of them have been placed in the center.

So do explain, pleaase! ;)

You did another great painting.
You said you used only one model, that's terrific! the girl sitting looks a lot younger than the other one.
Congrats.

Thanks Enzie and Claudemir for taking the time to comment.
Enzie, regarding your question: I originally had somehting else in mind compositionally (photo below is a quick initial idea in pen). Although I liked it, I found the wall behind to be a bit uninteresting and so with the table. By placing the elements on the table and moving the plates to the left on the wall, I figured the eye would move in a sort of circle, clockwise (standing figure-seated figure-table-still life-plates-standing figure), more than in a triangle. Unless it is a classical pyramidal composition, I try to avoid placing main objects dead center. Just a personal preference.
I appreciate your interest.

Claudemir, I did not intend for the seated figure to look younger, just different somehow. But if she looks younger, better still, no?

Carlos,
It's a fine composition. First the triangular with the girls and then the extention into the parobolic shape following the hands, heads, the plates on the wall and ending in the water jug on the table.

Carlos, I've enjoyed every single one of your paintings. They all tell a story and are so intimate in nature. You did a beautiful job in using the same model for the two different young women. They look related, but certainly not the same.

This piece is museum-worthy!

Carlos, another excellent painting. It must be in the air that you breathe. I must make plans to come and visit. Do you have a extra room or do I bring my tent?

Allan-- thank you for your comments. It

Beautiful, Carlos!

Carlos, this is beautifully structured and executed. I too find narrative paintings enthralling. Now if I could only find out what these two girls find so fascinating below the line of sight allowed by the picture....

Thanks Tom and Richard for your comments.

I have no idea. Maybe they fell asleep. ;)

Nice work, Carlos. (The light on the wall behind the two figures is quite exquisite.)

Carlos, I am the last one to join in to praise the balance and elegance of the composition and of the subdued tones.
I find that the negative space is especially beautiful and you have really managed to paint the air around the girls.
A very nice work indeed
Ilaria

Thomasin, thanks for taking the time to view and comment. Very much appreciated.
Ilaria, thank you also for your words. That "negative space" was quite a headache for a while. I wanted an illusion of space without it being overly distracting. The wall was also initially a yellowish-greenish colour--I was going for a split complementary harmony of red/yellow green/blue green, but the wall was too warm and it actually hurt my eye, so I painted over. In the end, I think the warm undertone of the wall helped the overall light that Thomasin mentioned and "air" that you speak about.

Thanks again.

Beautiful elegant piece Carlos!
I also love the quality of the light, and how you managed to control this very challenging composition.
Congratulations!

I really enjoy your work, Carlos, and I love the quiet beauty and atmosphere in this well-constructed painting. These girls are lovely models - you paint women very well, I think.

Garth Herrick 11-17-2007 02:20 AM

Carlos,

This is lovely! I can't believe both individuals are the same model.

Garth

Linda,
I appreciate your comment very much, coming from a woman AND a painter. Thanks for your kind words.

Garth,
Thank you again.
