The life sessions at the university started last week, so yesterday was my second session. They tend to have a lot of short poses. This was from the longest pose of the evening, a one-hour pose, that entailed only about 45 minutes, subtracting for two breaks. This is a detail, as it was a nude, but I concentrated on the face, so you're not missing much.

I've had difficulty capturing a likeness from life, and this is better than I usually do. I think it was better because I wasn't rushed into trying to catch it all in 20 minutes. One problem I had was that she held her head a little differently after the first break, and I continued to work with the shadow pattern I had started from the beginning. She had a spotlight above her.

It's not completely accurate, but she pretty much looked like this

Jeff,

I really like this little drawing! You know what they say, drawing is easy until you know how.

Lovely, Jeff. When are you planning to take the leap into color?

Oh, not for quite a while. If you saw my new post in Drawing Critiques, you know I still have a way to go with form before I can start thinking about color.

Jeff,

I am so impressed with your drawing skills, especially from life. I just bought Lon Haverly's book hoping it will help me in the life drawing classes I attend 2x a week. Sometimes I can get a likeness right away and other times I seem to muddy through to something but the quality is so overworked. Your drawing is so crisp, as if each line was quick and deliberate. I only hope to be able to catch up with you, my fellow pencil pusher!!

Jeff, this is a strong, graceful drawing, and I like it a lot. You're really getting the hang of that cylinder thing. Keep posting these drawings!
