Beach Bums
The painting is of my two boys at the beach last summer. It is 24 X 36 and is done in oil. The colors in the photo are not accurate-- there is too much yellow and not enough red and peach in the flesh tones. Feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of this painting are appreciated.
I've cropped this picture painfully close and it will now fit within the specific size range. When you look at the painting, picture more water around both boys. Thank you, Renee Price |

Here it is in a .jpg file since .jpg's appear within the post.

Sorolla is the Master in this area. If you can ever get to the Hispanic Society in NYC, you will have all your questions answered!
This is a complex composition which you have rendered very well. Don't be afraid to add white for wet areas on skin. |
Beautiful composition and expression. Oddly, this painting looks as though the figures were painted indoors with incandescent light, due to the warm tones of the flesh. You are afraid to use variety of color in the skin tones, huh? Come on, yes you are! You said there was too much yellow, and you are right.
Funny how we finish a work before realizing that we needed a different base color. The base color could have been palest blue, so as to force you to leave some in for reflection off the wet skin. The warm yellow base color does not achieve that. |
Thanks for your input. Actually, I meant that the photograph was not correct in the color of the flesh tones. The actual painting has several colors in the flesh tones.
