Varnishing a painting unstretched

Hi, I'm preparing to unframe a painting i did recently, and start a new one with the frame. I was thinking of varnishing it maybe 6 months down the road. However, it pains me when i think about having to restretch it again just for varnishing work - and not to mention adding more damage to the canvas with the re-tacking.
So i dunno if it's alright if i just varnish the painting later, without restretching it on canvas again. Does anyone have any good advice for me? :santa:
