Family Dinner

This painting is 47" x 50" high. It has alot going on - 5 family members, 2 dogs, complex architecture, indoor and outdoor lighting, and a bit of floral and landscape. I wanted to keep it loose despite all the balls to visually juggle. the brick alcove I think emphasize the intimacy. This was for a well to family. and it hangs in their living room which is about 30 feet by 50 feet in size.

Wow, you HAVE been busy! What a fabulous family portrait to have hanging on the wall. Definitely not a Sears moment.

Linda, congratulations! You are very gutsy to take on a large, complicated composition such as this one and I especially like the way you have arranged the subjects in different planes to keep the eye moving.

Linda, Congratulations!

You have done well, and the conversation is genuine and uncontrived.

Hi Linda,

You've pulled off an ambitious composition and it's a really interesting painting, colorful but with all the colors working together. I like the way the brick opening is not frame-like but instead opens into the windowed alcove, drawing the viewer in. Great brushwork in the rug!

My apologises for not replying right away, the past few days have been busy. Thenks Heidi, Linda Alexandra , Garth... This was probably one the most complex painting I've done to date. I'd like to post a photo of it hanging in the space - I know this is a rather unconventional painting but it really works well in the space of the room. I'm glad you like the composition, as I personal enjoying doing paintings that are "informally posed", that is to say I am loosely telling people what to do, but then let them be themselves ans see what comes of it. I enjoy how people's personality comes out through the way they hold themselves. It's painting the beauty of everday life.

thanks again

Linda...WOW
I really appreciated this latest series of yours. My... you have been busy. I was expecting this to be in a higher color key similar to your other recent postings. You surprised me by dropping the key to mid values. It is interesting to observe the various styles of artists. So many of us like to work in lower color keys, that it is like a breath of fresh air to have higher key works pop up. Congratulations.

Linda,

Do you sleep? Your productivity is humbling.

Successful but atypical "family at table" composition! You're taking chances by stepping back a few feet... and it's working! This is as much of an environmental portrait as it is a family portrait.

Reassessing the "standard design" of portraiture is a must, and you're proving how bold compositions can refresh one's work. Great stuff!
