Jan Van Eyck
1 Attachment(s)
I recently was in Australia and came across this masterpiece. I feel the color for the period (or any other for that matter) is remarkable and the setting to be outstanding. To think that early fifteenth century painting could be so advanced and unmatched for centuries, wow!
It has the slightly forced perspective of the day but works beautifully. I can only imagine the sensation the premier of such an advanced masterpiece must have made in the day. Still gets my heart pumping today. It was approximately 9" x 11" and had me standing at it for quite some time. I hope you enjoy this as much I did. Send me an email and I will try to send a very large image of it. [email protected] |

Clayton,
Jan Van Eyck was indeed an outstanding painter, ont only for his time. This little painting is so calm and meditative as a budda. Do you have any more information on the painting, if it is painted on panel and if it is tempera with oil glazes? It seems to have been painted in his studio, if one look at the window wall with the narrow bench / table. It is visible in his painting of the bridal couple too. His models, in almost the same pose, are also reused. |

I believe it was originally painted on panel. It is currently on panel but may have been transferred. It is glazed but I have no knowledge of the base layer(s). Thanks for the insight into the studio and model arrangements in other works for comparison. Makes me appreciate this piece even more as I know more about it. Thanks again. cjbiii |
