The Cost

Hello, SOG members. This portrait is my fourth portrait from life, over a span of several years. My father has been going through some trying times, and sat for me this morning to pose for a portrait and take a break from life. I told him his sad eyes made me want to cry, but I wanted to paint them just as they were. He's an amzing man.

Hi Mara, it's a very fine painting. I guess that he's smiling by now!!!

Mara,
I like the way you caught his expression. Part of the sadness comes from the direction of his eyes, I think, though I'm not sure why. The skin tones and facial planes are very well done. How does your father like it? |

Thank you, Allan and Alexandra. My dad really loves it and he had a wonderful time watching the process and getting to be a part of my learning experience. I took photos of this painting along the way, as it helps me to look back and identify mistakes I made, and most importantly, where I should have put down the brush. I am attaching a photo here that I do feel was a stronger portrait, before introducing the background. I've got a lot to learn, and a lot of experience painting from life to gain.

I agree with you about the earlier version. The face is soooo expressive. I love it.

Thank you so much, Mary!
