Photo
I've been using digital cameras for a while and I have settled on Nikons for their optics. For the point and shoot variety, Nikon provides the best pictures.
One thing I've learned to do is to never, NEVER use the flash when photographing humans for portrait reference. NEVER. Using flash is good if the objective of the picture is THE photograph itself.
I use a cable release, open up the lens and shoot at slow shutter speeds. The cable release for my Nikon 995 cost me $80. I can zoom in and out from it without getting near the camera. I also have a polariser filter to cut glare when shooting my paintings.
I am waiting for the price of the SLR's to come down to what I can afford. It will be sweet to be able to use my regular Nikon lenses (from my film camera), in a digital body.
