Ilaria, thank you also for your words. That "negative space" was quite a headache for a while. I wanted an illusion of space without it being overly distracting. The wall was also initially a yellowish-greenish colour--I was going for a split complementary harmony of red/yellow green/blue green, but the wall was too warm and it actually hurt my eye, so I painted over. In the end, I think the warm undertone of the wall helped the overall light that Thomasin mentioned and "air" that you speak about.
