I have not done very many children, but here goes my humble first impressions.

First: It seems to me that the pale background just makes his head stand out more and thus makes it look bigger. I think it would look better with a darker background creating a few lost and found edges around the head.

Second: The pinkish background competes with the skin tone for attention. A cooler background would make the skin look warmer and stand out more.

Third: His shoulders seem a bit narrow.

Fourth: You did a great job on the plaid and his facial features are very good.
