Pre-Raphaelite Painting Techniques
. . .Whilst browsing the Art section in an Edinburgh bookstore, I picked up this gem!
There are countless books on the PRG, and very pretty too, but I've rarely come across any this good for the artist regarding their technique.
The book is split into a few quick sections on their aims, backgrounds and training, and then gets it's teeth into the real stuff, such as colour theory, painting materials, and then specifically their methods and materials individually.
The descriptions of how they achieved their luminosity, beautiful glazes, and white ground and underpainting is fantastic. It even has an index of individual painting by artist, where they indicate date, priming, artist additional priming, if an underdrawing, which were the key pigments used, mediums, varnish and frame!
It's full title is "Pre-Raphaelite Painting Techniques ; 1848-56 , by Joyce Townsend, Jacqueline Ridge & Stephen Hackney. Its published by Tate Publishing, and its code is ISBN 1 85437 498 2.
A great book, I can't recommend it enough!
