Simon,

It is a beautiful painting, very strong and expressive. The cut off forehead, the hole in his left hand, the contrast in values all brings us to the face. Steven mentioned his left eye being low, and I will add the mouth that seems to be positioned a little to the left. The eye and the mouth add to the brightness of the light in a squinting manner, so with your style of painting this may be OK.

It is his right hand that I cannot decipher, it almost seems he has something in the hand but I am not sure.
