ReNae,
I assume that the reference of your mother would be a black and white?
Since the composition is given the next thing to do should be a color and value scheme so that you get a clear definition of the lighting.
Your present values are too close and make a flat impression of the figure.
You would be interested in emphasizing the skin color, but right now I think that the hair is the most prominent element of the head. What do you think?
To turn this balance around you could darken the background. See what that would do?
Make some small sketches with different colors and values. Preferably 3-4 values.

Yes Allan, your right on.... First... Darken the background. I will work on this.
