Chloe Underpainting

O.K. I've jumped in! This underpainting is a 16x20 burnt umber, lemon yellow rub out technique. Please let me know what you think. I thought I'd start out with a young child since the face is still rounded and there are no wrinkles or lines to get me bogged down. This is my first official oil portrait. I'm trying to expand my field since I spend most of my professional time doing commercial artwork, and pastel portraits.

A bit of color

Here she is with color glazes added. I still have some work to do on the hair and additional glazes. I really like this method, although I have spent most of my time mixing colors on the Covino pallet. I can see now how important the accuracy of the underpainting is!

I'm impressed by the drawing, because a good drawing is the foundation for a good painting. The best color techniques will not improve a poor drawing. Most of the negative critiques that I read in this section, are due to errors in the drawing.
