Mara,
I like the way you caught his expression. Part of the sadness comes from the direction of his eyes, I think, though I'm not sure why. The skin tones and facial planes are very well done. How does your father like it?

Thank you, Allan and Alexandra. My dad really loves it and he had a wonderful time watching the process and getting to be a part of my learning experience. I took photos of this painting along the way, as it helps me to look back and identify mistakes I made, and most importantly, where I should have put down the brush. I am attaching a photo here that I do feel was a stronger portrait, before introducing the background. I've got a lot to learn, and a lot of experience painting from life to gain.
